ALPHONSUS CIACCONIUS

Trajan's Column
The pillar of victory is a memorial for military triumphs. Trajan's Column, based on the Doric order, has a 200 m. spiralling frieze illustrating Trajan's war with the Dacians. It was built in the middle of the Forum in the year 113 AD by the architect Apollodoro from Damasco . These two prints illustrate the external elevation showing the amazing frieze, and the cross section showing the 116 foot shaft containing the spiral staircase. The prints were made by Alphonsus Ciacconius in 1616
