SIR HANS SLOANE

Sloane was born in Ireland in 1660 and as a boy he was fascinated by natural history. He he was educated in chemistry, anatomy, medicine and botany in England and France.. As a fellow of the prestigious scientific group, The Royal Society, Sloane was invited to travel to Jamaica as personal physician to the new Governor, Christopher Monck, the 2nd Duke of Albermarle. This wonderful opportunity allowed him to make new observations of the natural world and collect unusual plant specimens. During the ocean voyage Sloane recorded the habits of sea birds and noted the mysterious phosphorescence of the sea.
