JACOB GEORGE STRUTT 1790-1864: THE CHANDOS OAK ref: JS4
Strutt exhibited in the Royal Academy between the years 1822 - 1852. Though very much an English artist following successfully the style of Constable, Strutt did sojourn in Rome returning to England only in 1851. Strutt's Sylva Britannica was published in 1826 and is a selection of 'portraits of forest trees distinguished for their antiquity, magnitude and beauty'. The series comprises four magnificent, imposing trees: a Yew, Lime, Beech and Oak, Elm, Sycamore and Willow trees set in various parks around England. Arc now publishes its own versions of Strutt's trees, enlarged and tinted in Sepia.
