Often said to be the artistic successor to Piranesi in subject matter and theme, Rossini in fact belonged to an artistic era in which Piranesi's Romanticism was being rejected in favour of Truth. His views of Roman sights such as the Coliseum are accurate renderings of archeological remains. They retain the magnificence of towering Roman columns and arches, and are enlivened by scattering of peasants added by Bartolomeo Pinelli.
