ANDREA POZZO

info
Pozzo was the greatest virtuoso in perspective decoration of the Roman Baroque. In 1693 he produced his famous book on Perspective, emphasising the connection between painting and architecture, and this influenced architects all over Europe in the 18th Century. In the church of St. Ignazio (painted in the years 1685-1690) his perspective wizardry enlarged the existing architecture in height and depth by employing the techniques of trompe l'oeil. The painted ceiling is the ultimate expression of Baroque illusionism, creating the semblance of Heaven in the vault of a church.
