Henry Salt was born and educated in Lichfield. In 1802 he went to India and illustrated the book of travels written by his companion Lord Valentia published in 1809. He was then employed by the British Government to carry presents to negotiate an alliance with the King of Abyssinia. This expedition led to his publishing twenty four views of Abyssinia and the Red Sea.
