Bonaventura van Overbeck was born in Amsterdam in 1660. He was both a painter and engraver and visited Rome on three occasions. His recordings of the antiquities there, feature in the set published by Arc. The four Obelisks that he engraved are of S. Maria, Populo, Pamohili and Medici. They are illustrated in the context of their urban surroundings, and classical buildings, doorways and arches serve as backdrops to the monumental pillars.
