THE GARDENS OF VERSAILLES C.1714 ref: 97HC

Louis XIVs palace at Versailles was adorned with fantastic gardens designed by Andre LeNotre (1613-1700). He was a French landscape architect, born in Paris, and he succeeded his father in the office of intendant of the royal gardens. He later became controleur of the royal buildings, and in this capacity he laid out the gardens of Versailles and other royal palaces. He was also employed in other countries, and the park at Greenwich is said to be his work. His plans are characterised by strictly geometrical lines, radiating paths and enormous vistas. The detailed drawings of the Gardens of Versailles were executed by Pierre Martin and Ferdinand Delamonce.
